MONTREAL, October 30, 2019 – The Socks for Bubbly (Bas Pour Bulles) program is back for its 6th year. Elena, Les Enfants Terribles (all locations), Joe Beef, Marconi, Pastaga, Tavern on the Square, Tuck Shop and Restaurant Gus are some of the 26 restaurants from in and around Montreal working together to raise awareness of the health of homeless feet in the city. The Socks for Bubbly program is proud to count Toronto as part of its campaign for the third year with 8 Toronto restaurants participating: Bar Raval, DaiLo, Drake One Fifty & Mini Bar, Kiin, La Banane, Melrose on Adelaide, ONE and Richmond Station. And, this year, restaurants in Vankleek Hill, Ontario and Magog, Québec are also taking part. See the current list of participating restaurants below. From November 18 to November 24, 2019, all participating Québec and Ontario restaurants will offer a glass of bubbly in exchange for any donation of new warm socks.
“After seeing a documentary about the homeless and how it lifted their spirits to have the comfort of clean warm socks, I started to investigate if their needs were being met,” said Socks for Bubbly founder, Chef David Ferguson, of Restaurant Gus. “When I heard about the high demand and low supply of new warm socks, I realized I could help in a small way.”
(To kick things off, a fundraising dinner will be held at Restaurant GUS on November 19, 2019. Ticket price is $100 per person. Reservations can be made directly with Restaurant Gus, restaurantgus.com. The evening’s proceeds will go towards the purchase of socks for the homeless.)
The Plight of Homeless Feet
The homeless population is vulnerable to Canada’s weather conditions, especially in winter. The feet of our country’s homeless often go bare and are susceptible to open sores that can lead to nerve damage. Although socks (and underwear) are always in great demand at city shelters, they are rarely ever donated, which is the impetus behind the Socks for Bubbly [#SocksForBubbly] program.

“While it may surprise many, one of the most valuable contributions that can be made to help ease the hardship of homelessness is a pair of new, clean, warm socks,” said Matthew Pearce, the CEO of Montreal’s Old Brewery Mission. “Homeless people spend much of their day moving about from place to place, on foot, for their meals and a place to sleep and so, socks make the difference between pain and comfort.”
